CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Working to improve accessible charging services for electric vehicle (EV) drivers in her communities, state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is celebrating recent funding for Champaign County which was chosen as one of 25 projects that will provide up to $24 million for EV construction across the state.

“This funding comes at the heels of successfully passing legislation this spring which incentivizes more modest-income families to be eligible for rebates if they purchase a new or used electric vehicle,” said Ammons. “Electric vehicles are a sustainable, efficient option that can truly make a difference in the health and air quality of our communities. With new charging stations to be built right here in Champaign, more people will be able to access convenient stations along their day to day routes.”

Around $555,000 will be dedicated to the charging station, which will be built at Meijer, located at 2401 N. Prospect Avenue in Champaign by Electrify America LLC. The location will have at least four DC fast charging ports, each of which can fully charge a typical EV from empty in less than 30 minutes.

“I have to thank the Illinois Department of Transportation for the opportunity through the Illinois National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program to make this funding possible for our community,” said Ammons. “Building out our state’s EV charging infrastructure is a beneficial move for both our environment and our residents.”
