CHICAGO – Continuing her commitment to promoting self-love and pride state Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, along with State Senator Mattie Hunter and State Representative Kim DuBuclet, is inviting all women with naturally curly hair to the upcoming Loving Our Natural Hair, Curl Clinic, taking place on Sunday, September 28th.

“As I grew up there was more of a focus on hiding our natural hair texture or feeling compelled to straighten it to appear more acceptable in society,” Harper said. “There was also a lack of education on how to properly care for natural curls and I am happy to be part of making sure that my daughter as well as many other girls and women love their naturally curly hair as well as enjoy all different types of hair styles.”

Partnering with local stylists and experts, Harper will host a free Loving Our Natural Hair, Curl Clinic from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28th at 5222 S. Halsted St. at the Bishop Shepard Little Memorial Center on Chicago’s South Side. There will be information on basic care and maintenance for healthy hair, styling techniques, product selection, and a legislative panel discussion on laws that affect residents’ hair and body care.

“While hair may be the reason people may attend, we are also using this event to showcase community-based organizations and their missions as it relates to uplifting our youth, families and our most vulnerable in hopes of helping these organizations expand their reach and getting more support or volunteers for their initiatives,” said Harper.

Harper has been hosting Curl Clinics for the community since 2012 and is looking forward to seeing friends and neighbors join her once again for this peaceful, uplifting event for all ages.
