OTTAWA, Ill. – A strong proponent for workers’ rights and safety, state Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, joined 25 union workers of Teamsters Local 179 and over 100 United Auto Workers (UAW) Wednesday in response to Republic Services refusal to negotiate fair contracts for waste collectors.
“I’ve been picketing for workers’ rights since I was a child — I know how important these employees are and the distinct roles they play in our communities to keep them functioning,” said Briel. “It’s a shame that wealthy corporations like Republic Services would rather disrupt tens of thousands of American families’ trash services than negotiate with the workers that carry out these essential duties. After months — years — of Republic Services workers being stretched thin and underpaid, this strike is well overdue.”
The Ottawa strike Wednesday follows a series of nationwide walk-outs against Republic Services for underpaying employees. Over 2,000 Teamsters are actively striking or observing picket lines in light of Republic Services and Teamsters failing to reach a contract agreement after months of negotiations in cities across the country.
“I’ll continue to stand with Teamsters here at home and show support to our union workers nationwide. Our communities cannot grow if we continue to ignore the needs of hardworking Americans,” said Briel. “I urge Republic Services to negotiate fairly with Teamsters to protect over 8,000 waste collection workers and their families across the country.”
Thousands of Ottawa families may expect garbage collection delays due to the ongoing strikes.
