SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is backing a resolution in Springfield to urge the United States Congress to stop efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and to instead expand Medicare coverage to residents in Illinois.

“If the federal government passes the American Health Care Act, residents in Illinois with preexisting conditions may lose their healthcare coverage,” Mussman said. “It is concerning that the Governor has shown no indication that he will stand up for his constituents who will lose their health insurance because of reckless Washington politicians.”

House Resolution 445 urges the federal government and President Trump to oppose the American Health Care Act, the replacement plan put forth by Republicans as an alternative to the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.” Among numerous provisions, the Republican replacement plan would allow states to waive coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. It is estimated that millions of residents nationally could lose healthcare coverage with the passage of the American Health Care Act.

“We’re not talking about arbitrary numbers on a balance sheet,” Mussman said. “We’re talking about individual human lives. Our family members, friends and neighbors may lose their healthcare if the politicians in Washington get their way. We need to make it clear to those in power that stripping Illinoisans of their healthcare is morally irresponsible and we won’t stand for it.”
