Burke Fighting to Protect Health Insurance Coverage for Illinoisans with Pre-Existing Conditions

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In response to reckless proposals by Washington politicians to eliminate health insurance coverage for millions of Illinois residents and to roll back protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions, state Rep. Kelly Burke, D-Evergreen Park, is fighting to ensure no one can be denied care because of their medical history.

“I believe access to quality and affordable health care is a fundamental right and I am dedicated to protecting this right here in Illinois,” Burke said. “Health insurance companies shouldn’t be able to deny coverage simply to boost corporate profits. This measure will protect all Illinoisans with pre-existing conditions and ensure they continue having access to the care they need.”

Burke sponsored House Bill 2959, which prevents insurance companies selling policies in Illinois from discriminating against the sickest, oldest and most in need of care. Burke’s state-level protections would help people with pre-existing conditions like cancer, diabetes or heart disease continue to have access to affordable health insurance. The legislation passed the General Assembly with bipartisan support and now goes to Gov. Bruce Rauner for final approval.

Burke is also urging President Donald Trump and Congress to halt efforts to pass the American Health Care Act, also known as Trumpcare. The passage of Trumpcare would result in 24 million individuals across the United States losing access to health insurance, as well as make it more difficult for individuals with preexisting conditions to receive care. Burke is sponsoring a resolution stating the General Assembly’s opposition to Trumpcare.

“I am greatly concerned about President Trump’s proposal that would force countless families in my district to forgo seeking medical attention, because the cost is too great,” Burke said. “No one should have to go bankrupt because they got sick and I urge Congress to stop Trumpcare from becoming law.”
