SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, is fighting to rein in the rising cost of housing by passing a new bill cracking down on hidden ‘move-in fees’ added by landlords.
“Our underserved communities already have a harder time securing a home than other populations,” Lilly said. “When they finally are able to secure a home, it is considered a huge milestone in their lives. Unexpected fees can turn that milestone into a huge roadblock because they can hurt renters’ pockets tremendously and potentially lead to rental debt, negatively impacting their futures in housing markets.”
Lilly has prioritized efforts to crack down on high costs of living for working people in her community and House Bill 3564 is another step in that direction. The bill prohibits so-called ‘move-in fees,’ or other unnecessary expenses landlords charge at the time a lessor takes possession of a property.
