SPRINGFIELD, Ill.– State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is fighting to rein in the rising cost of housing by passing a new bill cracking down on hidden ‘move-in fees’ added by landlords.

“Due to already existing socioeconomic factors, our vulnerable communities operate on a strict budget,” Harper said. “More than likely, they have saved for years to rent an apartment or home
and unnecessary junk fees were not allocated in that budget. During a time when they are supposed to feel accomplished, they often feel worried because now they must scrape up extra cash that could go to other necessities.”

Harper has prioritized efforts to crack down on high costs of living for working people in his/her community and House Bill 3564 is another step in that direction. The bill prohibits so-called ‘move-in fees,’ or other unnecessary expenses landlords charge at the time a lessor takes possession of a property.
