MASCOUTAH, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, and state Sen. Christopher Belt, D- Swansea, are highlighting the recent release of $31 million in state support toward the construction of the MetroLink light rail extension to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport.

“This is needed investment that is supporting local jobs, strengthening our transit network and better positioning our region to meet the economic demands of tomorrow,” Hoffman said. “I appreciate the continued advocacy and work from Ken Sharkey and his team, Sen. Belt and every local official who is making this project a reality. I’m looking forward to riding next year.”

“Securing $31 million for the MetroLink light rail extension is a significant step forward for our region’s transportation infrastructure,” Belt said. “I’m proud to work alongside Rep. Jay Hoffman in delivering this crucial funding, ensuring that the MetroLink extension will serve as a vital link to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport.”

Hoffman and Belt have worked together to help secure state investment in the transit project, which is moving forward and expected to be open to riders in summer 2026. The recent $31 million release builds on a previous $98 million commitment under the state’s Rebuild Illinois capital program.

When completed, the 5.2 mile light rail extension will connect MidAmerica St. Louis Airport with the current MetroLink Red Line terminus at Shiloh-Scott Transit Center. As part of the project, a new station is being built directly across from the airport’s passenger terminal and parking lot on Airport Blvd.
