SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Representative Gregg Johnson, D-Rock Island, spoke on the House floor in support of House Resolution 118, condemning former President Donald Trump’s decision to issue blanket pardons to individuals convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Rep. Johnson released the following statement:
“One of Donald Trump’s first acts back in office was not to address the cost of living, expand healthcare, or fight for working families—it was to pardon convicted criminals, including those who attacked police officers.
“These were not political prisoners, they were criminals. Among those pardoned were individuals who used deadly weapons against law enforcement and carried zip ties into the Senate chamber. Trump’s blanket pardon is a slap in the face to the brave law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol that day.
“I urge my colleagues to support HR 118 and send a clear message that Illinois will never excuse political violence or the betrayal of our Constitution.”
