SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In his role as chairman of the House Committee on Prescription Drug affordability, state Rep. Jawaharial Williams, D-Chicago, will be at the forefront of efforts to lower the cost of lifesaving medication and expand access to care in Illinois.
“I believe that healthcare is a right, and it is our duty to continually expand access to that right and remove barriers to care,” said Williams. “No one should have to decide between their next meal and medication, but as families face rising costs that’s just what some are doing just to get by.”
Since first being appointed to the chairmanship of the Prescription Drug Affordability Committee, Williams helped to enact legislative reforms that lower the cost of critical medication and medical devices in Illinois. He also oversaw subcommittees aimed at tackling some of our most pressing concerns such as health disparities, the opioid epidemic and improving our prescription drug supply.
“Although we live in the richest country in the world, many of us often have to deal with poor outcomes due to high costs and other barriers to care,” said Williams. As chairman of this committee, it is my number one priority to slash patient costs and continue to help create a healthcare system that is truly reflective of our great nation and the needs of our citizens.”
