SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is applauding new funding secured for local literacy and reading programs in the state budget.

“Reading and literacy programs fill a much-needed role for those in our community, who struggle with understanding written language,” said Scherer. “An inability to read adequately can hinder one’s social and career prospects, and I encourage all who struggle to seek help without fear of shame or judgement.”

Through her support of the FY 25 budget, the Library and Literacy Grants program was able to allocate $28 million in funding to deserving libraries, literacy programs and other critical services throughout the state. Locally, Scherer helped to bring funds to a family literacy program, adult literacy services at Richland Community College, a veteran home library and the Lincoln Library in Springfield.

The budget Scherer worked to pass includes more than $250,000 for local libraries and literacy programs, including:
Baby TALK – $50,000
Richland Community College – $150,000
Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs – $50,000
Lincoln Library – $18,360

“As a teacher, I always told my students that knowledge is power. No matter how old we get that never changes, “said Scherer. “Gaining the ability to read can be one of the most transformative and uplifting experiences for an individual yet most of us take it for granted. Let’s continue to hold high the value of reading and look for creative ways that we can support these initiatives.”
