SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In recognition of Digital Connective and Lifeline Awareness Week, state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is encouraging local income-eligible residents to take advantage of discounted internet and phone services through the federal government’s Lifeline Program.

“In our connected world, a cell phone and access to the internet are absolutely essential yet many of our citizens struggle to pay the rising costs of internet and phone bills,” said Scherer. “Lowering the costs associated with these two essential utilities can be the difference for so many families.”

Scherer is encouraging low-income residents to apply to the Federal Commerce Commission’s (FCC) Lifeline Program, which provides eligible applicants discounts on phone and internet services. To apply of find more information, please visit www.lifelinesupport.org.

“Access to a cellphone can be the little bit of hope that helps someone get through a difficult situation,” said Scherer. “Without a phone, applying for jobs, staying connected with loved ones and other parts of daily life become much more difficult to navigate. Anyone who is experiencing difficulties with staying connected should apply.”
