Morris-Backed Measure Streamlining State Systems Upgrades and Training Signed into Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Legislation championed by state Rep. Yolonda Morris, D-Chicago, streamlining technological innovation at state agencies in order to provide better, more efficient services is now law.

“During the pandemic, we all saw just how critical our government’s digital infrastructure was as we relied on our devices for work, school, entertainment and more,” said Morris. “In recognition of the critical role technology plays in every part of our lives, I think it is critical that we ensure some uniformity in purchases to help protect the digital spaces we rely on so deeply.”

Morris’ House Bill 4813 shifts oversight of state department and agency technology acquisition from individual units to the state Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT). The purchase of new tools and equipment, development of new technology and adherence to accessibility standards will shift entirely to DoIT. Cybersecurity experts agree that uniformity of technology and implementation of oversight within large entities can help to lessen risk and increase security
