ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — A measure eliminating the state grocery tax and cutting costs on essential purchases that was backed by state Rep. Mary Beth Canty, D-Arlington Heights, was signed into law on Monday.
“As our community continues to deal with high costs of everyday goods, I am continuing to prioritize cutting prices and relieving financial burdens that make our lives more challenging,” Canty said. “When money is tight, every dollar counts and I will keep working to find more areas to ease expenses and make essential purchases a little less demanding.”
Continuing to work on cutting costs, Canty backed House Bill 3144, which eliminates the 1% state tax on groceries throughout Illinois.
Canty also took steps to cut costs this year by taking steps to pass legislation making healthcare more affordable, expand childcare programs and offering tax credits to working families.
“As a lawmaker, improving the quality of life for the people I represent is something I take very seriously,” Canty said. “Putting dollars back into the pockets of working people is a central aspect of that goal. There is more work to be done here, but this measure represents great progress.”
