SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Concert venues are better prepared to treat drug overdoses under a new law now in effect from state Rep. Jawaharial ‘Omar’ Williams, D-Chicago, expanding access to opioid antagonists at live music sites.

“This bill is designed to save lives not just on the West Side of Chicago but all over the state of Illinois. The opioid epidemic is a national problem, and similar legislation should be enacted at the federal level,” said Williams. “As we continue to move through the warmer months, there will be more festivals, concerts and gatherings across the state. This legislation will protect attendees and prevent unnecessary deaths.”

Williams passed House Bill 1557, which requires business owners who operate music venues to have opioid antagonists on the premises. The legislation also requires that the businesses provide sufficiently trained staff to properly administer the lifesaving drug. Signed into law last year, Williams’ House Bill 1557 took effect on June 1 this year.
