SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Motorists would soon have the option to use a digital driver’s license under a plan backed by state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria.
“With smartphones now common, this update will give people another, more convenient way to show their identification when needed,” Gordon-Booth said. “As more states offer digital forms of identification and technological improvements ensure this will be a secure system, Illinois is ready to move forward with this option.”
House Bill 4952 would authorize the Illinois Secretary of State to create and issue mobile driver’s licenses and identification cards. The digital cards would not replace existing physical cards, but would serve as a companion – and potentially more convenient – option for times when the card must be shown. Mobile identification cards are becoming increasingly popular, with neighboring states Missouri and Iowa already offering a digital companion.
An initiative of the Illinois Secretary of State, House Bill 4952 passed with bipartisan support and will be sent to the governor for approval.
