BERWYN, Ill. – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently announced that it is initiating a rulemaking process to mandate the disclosure of AI-generated content in political advertising on the nation’s airwaves. State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, a leader in regulating AI technology in the Illinois House, released the following statement:
“Earlier this year, I introduced legislation that would regulate deceptive AI-generated political deepfakes in Illinois. I commend the Federal Communications Commission for taking this step to regulate political ads by requiring labeling, similar to regulations I proposed we adopt in Illinois. Americans deserve to know whether the content they see is real or AI-generated, especially as AI is increasingly used to deceive voters. The recent rulemaking announcement is an important step to protecting our democracy and maintaining trust in our elections. We have already seen AI’s impact in politics through deceptive ads and robocalls, underscoring the urgency of creating regulations.
I look forward to reviewing the FCC’s actions in the coming months to determine what further steps Illinois will need to take to protect voters.”
