Gordon-Booth Votes to Waive Building Permit Fees for Disabled Veterans

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Disabled veterans who need to modify their home to accommodate their needs would no longer be charged local building permit fees under a plan supported Wednesday by state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria.

“When a veteran needs to make safety adjustments to their home due to their disability, the least we can do is remove government permit fees,” Gordon-Booth said. “Many of these individuals were willing to put their body on the line for us, and we should be looking at ways to support them here at home. We’re grateful for the service our veterans provided for our country, and are thankful for everything they continue to do for our community.”

Gordon-Booth supported Senate Bill 2751, which would provide a building permit fee waiver for veterans and their caregivers if the home improvements are required to accommodate a disability of the veteran. Qualified veterans or their caregivers would need to provide proof of their veteran status, as well as the improvements needed due to the veteran’s disability.

The bipartisan proposal has passed both houses of the General Assembly and will head to the governor for final approval.
