ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – In an effort to empower residents against identity theft and reduce clutter, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is partnering with the City of Romeoville, state Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, and ABRI Credit Union to host a free Shred Day event.

“With the constant threat of scam artists, safeguarding personal information is crucial,” said Manley. “By securely disposing of sensitive documents, individuals can significantly mitigate the risk of falling prey to identity theft. I highly encourage residents to attend my Shred Day event and protect themselves from fraud.”

During her time in the General Assembly, Manley has worked to protect residents from fraud. She has pushed for legislation banning telephonic solicitation that targets seniors, cracking down on predatory sales tactics targeting older adults. Manley also regularly hosts fraud seminars to help educate residents on how to protect themselves from scam artists. As part of her efforts to combat fraud and identity theft, Manley is hosting a Shred Day on Saturday, May 18 from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the Romeoville Village Hall, located at 1050 W. Romeo Rd. in Romeoville.

During the event, residents are encouraged to safely dispose of documents containing personal information, including bank statements and medical records. Each attendee may bring up to two boxes of paper for shredding, and once the truck is full the event ends.

“While the threat of information theft looms large, simple precautions like shredding old documents can significantly bolster one’s defense against fraud,” said Manley. “I would like to thank Mayor Noak, Rep. Avelar, and ABRI Credit Union for partnering with me to host this Shred Day and for giving residents another resource that they can use to prevent themselves from becoming the victim of fraud.”
