AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, was recently named ‘Governmental Leader of the Year’, along with state Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, by the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference. They received the award for the work they did last year passing a measure granting freedoms to law enforcement to use drones to promote public safety.

“I am deeply grateful to the DuPage Mayors and Managers for this recognition. Following the tragic mass shooting at the Henry Pratt Company just 5 years ago, preventing gun violence, especially mass shootings, will always carry substantial significance in our community,” Hernandez said. “Having the backing of community leaders as I work for solutions to this problem means a lot as we continue to fight for an end to gun violence.”

Hernandez and Holmes passed the Drones as First Responders Act to grant freedoms to law enforcement professionals to use drones in various police operations, such as monitoring special events. This measure is, in part, a response to tragic mass shootings that have struck Illinois recently, including the Henry Pratt Shooting in 2019 and the Highland Park Shooting in 2022.
