Scherer-Backed Measure to Allow Expansion of Springfield High School

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is helping Springfield High School grow by supporting legislation to allow the school district to acquire vacant lots key to the school’s expansion.

“Besides these two small parcels of land, the details and minutia of the expansion have already been settled,” said Scherer. “The more quickly we act, the sooner we can build the 21^st Century learning center that our kids need and deserve.” 

Scherer’s bill will continue to move the renovation process at Springfield High School forward by facilitating discussions that will allow the district to acquire the vacant properties needed to complete the school’s expansion. The $126 million renovation will bring updates to the school such as air conditioning and expanded facilities, including academic and athletic facilities. In addition, the school will be able to support a larger population of students. Construction is slated to begin in 2024.The bill passed through both legislative chambers with strong bipartisan support.

“For years, local families have asked for these basic improvements to their high school,” said Scherer. “I am excited to see the next step in bringing the district’s community’s goals of renovation to fruition.”
