CHICAGO, Ill. – Along with other elected officials, State Rep. Theresa Mah, D-Chicago, attended and walked in the annual Día de los Niños Parade this past weekend.
“I strongly believe we need to support our youth and do everything we can to make sure they thrive and have a prosperous future,” said Mah. “This parade is a great reminder of why it is so vital to protect education and rights for our most important citizens, the children of our neighborhoods.”
This year’s Día de los Niños parade theme was “Children’s Rights are DACA Rights.” The parade which took place in Pilsen and celebrated its 18th consecutive run, had hundreds of attendees. The end of the parade had a ceremony with live musical and dance performances from the Chicago Mariachi Program and other cultural performance groups in the district. During the ceremony, three scholarships were awarded. Rep. Mah sponsored a scholarship to Isabel Cruz, a graduate of Benito Juarez High School, who will be the first in her family to attend college. Isabel is hoping to study pre-veterinary medicine in college.
Mah is serving her first term in the Illinois General Assembly as State Representative of the 2nd District, which includes the Chicago neighborhoods of Pilsen, Chinatown, Bridgeport, McKinley Park, Brighton Park and Back of the Yards.
Mah sponsored one of the Día de los Niños scholarships to Isabel Cruz, a graduate from Benito Juarez High School.
