Canty Joins 600 Legislators Urging SCOTUS to Protect Reproductive Health Medication

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — State Rep. Mary Beth Canty, D-Arlington Heights, joined a nationwide wave of legislators urging the Supreme Court to defend access to mifepristone and other critical reproductive health medications.

“Having access to important reproductive drugs like mifepristone is crucial to maintaining women’s rights to choose,” Canty said. “I’m joining my fellow lawmakers in signing this letter of support for protecting access to mifepristone to ensure women and families across the country have lifesaving options regarding their right to choose.”

Canty signed an amicus brief, or a letter of an advisory brief, urging the Court to reject right-wing efforts to restrict access to mifepristone, one of only two medications used to safely end pregnancy and treat miscarriage. More than 600 other legislators from 49 states co-signed. Illinois received more legislative signatures than any other state seeking mifepristone’s protection.

“Whether we are fighting to preserve the right to choose, promoting equal opportunities for immigrants or combatting discrimination against the LGBTQ community, Illinois is—and will remain—a haven for human rights,” Canty said. “The radical anti-choice agenda assailing reproductive freedom across the country has no place in our state. As long as I stand for this community in Springfield, I can promise my steadfast opposition to any deeply misguided attempts to curtail this fundamental freedom.”
