GURNEE, Ill. – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, issued this response following Gov. Pritzker’s veto of legislation that would have reduced regulation on new nuclear power facilities:

“Our community has seen firsthand the challenges that come with a decommissioned nuclear plant, and I am keenly aware of the long-term economic and environmental issues that they present. Zion has faced the dangers of a technology that remains hazardous long after it is no longer used, and we have dealt with the economic losses that accompany those dangers.

“Illinois has made clear and substantial commitments to a green future powered by clean energy sources. Inviting the reintegration of nuclear energy into our infrastructure is a step backwards. Nuclear plants go hand in hand with extremely toxic byproducts that will present environmental and safety threats for years to come. If we want to truly embrace clean energy, nuclear power is not part of the equation.

“I thank Governor Pritzker for making the smart choice for the future of this state and vetoing this bill.”
