Kelly Supports First Responders with Training Reimbursement Law

CHICAGO – State Rep. Michael J. Kelly, D-Chicago is working on behalf of EMTs and paramedics across the state, backing a bill that will reimburse them for expenses associated with required training.

“When first responders undergo training to help them save lives and prevent harm, it’s not right for the expenses incurred from that to come out of their pocket,” Kelly said. “That’s why I stepped up to make sure they ultimately don’t.”

Kelly sponsored Senate Bill 1750, which provides—subject to appropriation of funds by the General Assembly—that starting in 2024, fire protection districts will reimburse EMTs and paramedics employed by or under contract with them, including firefighters who are required to have either certification, for mandatory training expenses.

The new law was passed by both the House and Senate unanimously and Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed it into law over the weekend. It goes into effect January 1, 2024. 

“Making sure that our first responders get the training they need without having to pay out of pocket is simply the right thing to do, and it just makes sense,” Kelly said. “When we take care of them, they are better able to take care of us.”
