BELLEVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, is praising increased efforts in recent months from the Illinois State Police (ISP) to dedicate additional resources and troopers to the Metro East.

“From targeting highway shootings to increasing trooper presence, I am appreciative of the hard work put in every day in our region by ISP,” Hoffman said. “They’re helping to get violent criminals off of our streets and helping to prevent incidents before they can happen.”

The results from ISP’s increase in anti-violence resources for the area were recently highlighted by the state police agency. The Statewide Anti-Violence Enforcement (SAVE) South Unit, a Highway Interdiction Team (HIT), a Fatal 4 Team and ISP Troop 8 have increased patrol presence while leveraging intelligence and technology. As a result, their efforts over the past few months have led to hundreds of arrests and criminal cases, as well as the removal of illicit guns and drugs. An emphasis has been placed on area highways, aiming to reduce road rage incidents, highway shootings, trafficking and impaired driving.

Hoffman also teamed up with ISP this spring to pass House Bill 2412, which reflected recommendations from the agency to clarify and streamline statutory language related to their mission.

“ISP Director Brendan Kelly understands the Metro East, and understands the importance of prioritizing resources to this area of the state,” Hoffman said. “There will always be challenges when combating violence, but the strong partnership from ISP with local law enforcement makes me more optimistic we will be able to effectively curb violence in the weeks and months ahead.”
