ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – As part of her efforts to provide useful services to her constituents, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, will be hosting a free Community Shred Day on Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Ovation Center, located at 349 S. Weber Rd. in Romeoville.

“While there are many ways that scammers and fraudsters target individuals, one of the easiest ways to prevent identity theft is by ensuring that sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands,” said Manley. “Whether you’re looking to protect yourself by securely disposing of important documents or just get rid of clutter and unused papers around your home, I highly encourage residents to take a few moments to stop by my Shred Day.”

At Manley’s Shred Day, residents are encouraged to bring any documents that contain personal information, such as bank statements and medical bills, to safely destroy. Residents must remove staples, paper clips, or other bindings before their papers can be shredded. The event will run until 12 p.m. or until the shred truck reaches capacity. Each attendee may shred up to two boxes of papers. Business shredding will not be accepted.

During her time as a state representative, Manley has worked to protect residents from fraud. She helped pass legislation increasing the number of days seniors have to cancel certain contracts from uninvited solicitors, giving them additional recourse against unethical practices and sales tactics. Manley has also held a Facebook Safety seminar, teaching residents about ways to protect themselves from scammers on Facebook and other websites.

“With the many expenses that residents have to keep up with, the last thing they can afford is to be tricked out of their hard-earned dollars by criminals,” said Manley. “Whether it’s through events such as my Shred Day or through legislation, I will continue to fight to ensure that everyone has the information and resources they need to protect themselves from those looking to steal from them.”
