AURORA, Ill. – Last Saturday, state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, teamed up with the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry and the Period Collective for a menstrual hygiene product distribution event.
“I was happy to see so many people come out to take advantage of our menstrual hygiene product giveaway on Saturday. These products are an essential part of health services for all people who menstruate, and helping combat a lack of access can make a huge difference in healthy living,” Hernandez said. “During my time as a representative in Springfield, I have been proud to pass legislation that makes significant headway increasing access to these products, and I hope to continue to work to guarantee these products to all Illinoisans in need of them.”
The Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry was founded to make basic life needs available to Aurora households in-need. The Period Collective is a Chicago nonprofit that provides menstrual hygiene products to local shelters, transitional housing facilities, schools and food banks.
Close to $1000 worth of products were donated to 10-15 families. In recent years, Hernandez has passed numerous measures to cut costs and increase access of menstrual hygiene products.
