Stuart Heralds Smart, Responsible State Budget

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois can look forward to a responsible state budget after state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, stood up for restraint, responsibility and sound fiscal planning in the FY2024 state budget.

“A state’s budget is a reflection of that state’s approach to doing the people’s business. That’s why I demanded a fiscally and socially responsible budget that makes smart, disciplined investments in our future,” Stuart said. “This budget is balanced in every sense. Once again, we’ve made smart decisions, paid down debt and put Illinois on track for further growth and credit upgrades.”

The budget, as passed by lawmakers at the end of May, adds to the state’s rainy day fund, pays down pension liabilities ahead of schedule, makes smart investments in safer communities, gives early childhood, K-12, vocational and university education each a major fiscal shot in the arm, and makes major contributions toward public safety, economic development, infrastructure and healthcare access goals.

“It wasn’t that long ago that years of mismanagement left Illinois teetering on the edge of junk status,” Stuart said. “Now, while there is a lot of work left to be done, we are in a much better position as we continue the work of rebuilding Illinois’ fiscal house. All we have to do is stay on this upward trajectory and we’ll be getting the state back to work for working families.”
