CHICAGO — State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, and other state and local representatives are accepting donations to support asylum seekers as they await more permanent housing.
“Many of these asylum seekers and refugees are arriving in Chicago with next to nothing. It’s important that we as representatives of our communities rally together to do as much as we can to support the transition for these arriving migrants,” Jiménez said. “My office is not only accepting donations like blankets and essential needs, we’re also partnering with community health centers like Belmont Cragin Cook County Health to get medical assistance, but we need to do more.”
Jiménez and state Sen. Omar Aquino are hosting a donation drive to get needed supplies to new arrivals at their district office at 4053 W. Armitage Ave. Acceptable items include but are not limited to: pain relievers/fever reducers, shampoo, baby wipes, diapers, toothpaste, books in spanish, nonperishable finger foods and dinner meals, backpacks and sleeping bags.
More information about acceptable items can be found on Jiménez’s Instagram page @rep.lilianjimenez or Facebook page @rep.jimenez4th
“Coming with no more than the clothes on their back, these asylum seekers need all the help, support and supplies we can give them,” Jiménez said. “I hope our community can join me and some of their state and local representatives as we prepare these migrants for their future in Chicago.”
