Andrade Cracks Down on ‘Spoofing’ with New Legislation

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Consumer information protections would be expanded in telephone solicitations under new legislation advanced by state Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago. 

“Solicitors and telemarketing schemes are getting more complex by the day, and our laws aren’t keeping pace,” Andrade said. “Ploys like ‘spoofing’ where marketers trick caller ID technology to keep callers on the line should not be allowed, especially when these calls can lead to disastrous financial consequences. This legislation brings more scrutiny to these schemes telemarketers use to scam consumers out of personal information, protecting families in the process.” 

Andrade joined the fight for greater telemarketing transparency with Senate Bill 160. The legislation prohibits ‘spoofing’ whereby telemarketing companies obscure caller ID. solicitations will be required to immediately disclose the name and nature of the call and caller, require confirmation from the person being called that they agreed to solicitation, and work with solicited individuals if they choose not to be contacted. 

Andrade has fought for technology laws that keep families safe and their finances secure. He recently passed House Bill 3808, blocking utility companies and municipalities from passing on new taxes on streaming services to consumers. 

“Too often families have to maneuver through the various strategies telemarketing companies use to contact individuals,” Andrade said. “We are moving to give families more opportunities to opt out of these types of calls and keep their information safe.”
