SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Anne Stava-Murray and public health advocates will hold a press conference on Wednesday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the Capitol Blue Room to discuss efforts to ensure Illinois consumers are informed about health risks associated with gas stoves.
Studies have linked gas stove usage and asthma risks for more than 50 years, yet lack of education and federal regulations leave consumers largely unaware. Stava-Murray’s House Bill 3572 would require all new gas stoves sold in Illinois to have a warning label detailing the asthma risks associated with gas stove emissions. Labeling new stoves would help Illinoisans make informed decisions about what products to put in their homes. The bill would not ban gas stoves or require existing stoves to be modified or removed.
A growing body of evidence on the respiratory and other health risks associated with gas stove usage has led the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, and Physicians for Social Responsibility to raise the alarm, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recently opened an investigation into the health risks and potential opportunities to mitigate harm. More families cook with gas in Illinois than in any other state, and a recent study attributes 21% of childhood asthma cases in Illinois to gas stove pollution.
