Rep. Barbara Hernandez Responds to Budget Address, Prioritizes Education, Reproductive Rights

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, issued the following response to Gov. Pritzker’s State of the State address on Wednesday:

“With higher credit ratings, lower debt and a replenished rainy day fund, Illinois is enjoying the soundest financial footing we have seen in years. This presents an opportunity to pursue ambitious goals; most importantly an education system that meets the individual needs of every student and guarentees resources like mental health counciling, ample nursing staff and a faculty of fairly-compensated teachers. While Aurora is lucky enough to boast great educational institutions, like the Illinois Math and Science Academy, many kids throughout our community and across Illinois still aren’t getting the same level of attention.

“In my new position as Assistant Majority Leader and as Vice Chair of the House Higher Education Appropriations committee, I will be taking lead roles advocating for education funding in K-12 schools and institutions of higher learning. Trade schools, 4-year universities, technical schools and community colleges all provide opportunities that underserved communities deserve.

“Our country is facing an unprecedented assault on the bodily autonomy of millions of its citizens, but Illinois is standing up to radical interests. Challenges to the right to an abortion will only be met with failure. The budget will reflect substantial funding for abortive services in underserved communities, especially in areas on our borders, where it will be most needed.

“I am confident that Illinois’ budget for the coming fiscal year will reflect these and other priorities, and I thank Governor Pritzker for a proposal that addresses so many vital needs.”
