SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – To help homeowners that have fallen behind on their mortgage payments get back on track, state Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, passed legislation out of the House that allows residents who are multiple months behind on paying their bill to make partial payments.

“When homeowners are experiencing financial difficulties and fall behind on their mortgage, paying the bill all at once can feel insurmountable,” Andrade said. “One of my constituents came into my office with this problem, she wanted to make a payment to avoid falling further behind, but her lender would only accept a payment that covered the full amount she owed.”

Andrade’s proposal, House Bill 2965, requires banks and other mortgage lenders to accept a one-month payment if an individual is more than one-month behind on their mortgage bill. Andrade passed the bill out of the House last week.

“By allowing folks to make partial payments, it makes it easier for them to get on a path toward being current on their mortgage,” Andrade said. “I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate and the governor to get this legislation signed into law and provide mortgage relief for families that have fallen behind on their payments.”

House Bill 2965 is waiting further consideration in the Senate.
