Walsh Announces $125,000 Grant for Joliet Public Library

JOLIET, Ill. – State Rep. Larry Walsh, Jr., D-Elwood, announced that the Joliet Public Library will receive a $125,000 grant to improve facilities through the office of the Illinois Secretary of State.

“Joliet is fortunate to have a great library system with convenient locations and friendly staff,” Walsh said. “This grant will help the Joliet Library update their Ottawa Street Branch Street location and ensure a safe and fun environment that encourages learning and exploration.”

The Secretary of State’s Live and Learn Construction Grant Program assists public libraries with construction costs in their facilities. Grants are awarded based on recommendations from a statewide committee following a review process. Local money is matched by state grants.

Walsh announced that the Joliet Public Library would use the $125,000 grant to replace the roof on the Ottawa Street Branch, located in downtown Joliet. The Ottawa Street location opened in 1903 and was designed by the famed architect Daniel H. Burnham.

“We would like to thank Secretary Jesse White and Representative Walsh on continuing to support valuable programs like the Live and Learn Construction Grant,” said Joliet Public Library Executive Director Megan Millen. “The replacement of the Ottawa Street Branch’s roof is the first step towards remodeling the downtown location and this grant will go a long way towards helping us move the Library in a positive direction.”
