DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – State Rep. Anne Stava-Murray, D-Downers Grove, is set to step up her efforts on behalf of Illinois families as the newly-appointed Chairperson of the Illinois House Public Health Committee for the upcoming 2023 legislative session.
“Safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the population is perhaps any government’s foremost responsibility, as reflected by one of the fundamental mandates in our Constitution’s preamble—to ‘promote the general welfare’,” Stava-Murray said. “Having been entrusted with a leading role in the crafting of policies that will make Illinois families healthier is both an exciting honor, and one that means a great deal to me.”
Stava-Murray is formulating a policy agenda aimed at promoting improvements in public health, including ensuring that every person in Illinois has fair and equitable access to doctors and the healthcare system, protecting and expanding access to reproductive health care including contraception, and weighing potential policy responses to recent studies that have raised questions about health risks possibly related to gas stoves and heaters.
“The best healthcare system in the world isn’t much good if many people can’t effectively use it. That’s why my first priority will always be promoting equal access,” Stava-Murray said. “But that’s just the beginning. Whether it be protecting women’s right to choose in the post-Roe era, or ensuring that the lessons learned during the last two years are reflected in public health policy with the goal of enabling us to take the next pandemic more in stride, or following the science as we conduct the ongoing process of ensuring Illinoisans’ homes and businesses are safe; I am excited to hit the ground running. Together, I know we can reach for a healthier future for all.”
