OAK LAWN, IL – State Rep. Kelly Burke, D-Evergreen Park, was recently named chair of the House Revenue Committee. Under her direction, the committee will maintain its focus on fiscal responsibility and smart budgeting that has served Illinois well in recent years.
“I am grateful to Speaker Welch for the opportunity to take a leadership role in this key area,” Burke said. “In recent years, previous chairs of this committee have led Illinois to a much stronger fiscal position. Paying back bills early saves taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in interest charges while improving our long-term credit standing. My goal is to keep up that trend going strong so that we can afford to steadily lessen the property tax burden on Illinois working families.”
Burke was appointed as chair of the House Revenue Committee by Speaker Emanuel ‘Chris’ Welch. The Revenue Committee plays a key role in passing legislation that covers tax rebates, bill payments and funding of some state agencies. Revenue is also responsible for passing a budget every year.
“Illinoisans deserve representatives who are careful with their tax dollars. As chair of the Revenue committee, I take that responsibility with the seriousness it deserves,” Burke said. “I look forward to this new challenge as the 103rd General Assembly begins.”
