CHICAGO – State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, issued this statement following the news that a construction worker passed away after being pulled from the collapse of a 141-year-old building in Bronzeville:
“The passing of this man is a tragedy, and my heart goes out to his loved ones as they bear the burden of their grief. I also thank our first responders for their rapid and persistent efforts to save his life, often at their own risk, despite the heartbreaking outcome.
“Our community should not be under the threat of unstable buildings. While Illinois has made progress restoring crumbling infrastructure in recent years, those restorations have been slow to arrive in Black and low-income areas, and today we face the consequences. As the coming legislation session begins, I will redouble my efforts to get rid of these public safety hazards so that no more lives are lost in vain.”
