PEORIA, Ill. – State Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria, issued the following statement Wednesday after being sworn in for a new term:

“The start of a new General Assembly is an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective on the challenges facing families across our state. It’s critical that we come together to further invest in our education, improve public safety and protect reproductive freedoms.

“We cannot roll back human rights. The consequences of the Dobbs decision will continue to send shockwaves throughout the country, and it’s critical that Illinois strengthens its position as the Midwest’s leader in reproductive freedoms. I will continue to use the full weight of my position to support reproductive freedoms and help those who would be unjustly persecuted in other states.

“We must also continue to take comprehensive action to support public safety efforts in our community. Public safety is never a static issue, and I am appreciative of the feedback I receive regularly from local police, prosecutors and community organizations that deal with this issue every day. Together we have taken significant steps in recent years to create a better system to tackle violence, but work remains.

“Our children and our schools must always be a front and center priority. While recent action has made school funding more equitable, it’s important that we continue to develop 21st century classrooms, attract talented teachers and give every student – no matter their background – the opportunity to unlock their full potential.

“I remain grateful for the privilege and opportunity to serve as representative for this community, and look forward to a productive year that addresses the challenges of families across our region.”
