Scherer Highlights Creation of State Funded UIS Innovation Center

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is highlighting a new state project to bring a University of Illinois Springfield Innovation Center to downtown Springfield, using a $15 million investment to repurpose a building previously owned by the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.

“The creation of the innovation center in downtown Springfield is just one of the many commitments made by the state to spur growth by providing a space for employees and entrepreneurs alike to explore new ideas and refine their skills,” said Scherer. “In addition to increasing economic activity in the area, the center will also help local organizations tackle complex problems by providing collaborative space for nonprofit organizations, social service agencies and policy centers.”

The Illinois Innovation Network and University of Illinois will oversee the design and construction of the University of Illinois Springfield Innovation Center, with the structure’s completion currently scheduled for 2025. The center aims to spark innovation and growth in the region by establishing a business incubator, policy center, and free-use technology, labs and meeting spaces. The center aims to establish a critical intersection between state government, policy, scholarship and entrepreneurship in downtown Springfield.
