Stava-Murray Heralds U.N. Human Rights Day

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – On the 74^th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray is heralding U.N. Human Rights Day which is observed on Dec. 10 around the world, including in the United States.

“Maintaining our efforts to increase justice and combat inequality and exploitation around the world is an ongoing and very important cause,” Stava-Murray said. “Those who suffer from abuse, discrimination and disenfranchisement—including, and often disproportionately, those who identify as women and girls—need and deserve help, and that in turn requires awareness.”

U.N. Human Rights Day is observed each year on Dec. 10, and marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. The observance was first established in 1950.

This year, the United Nations, according to its website, will launch a year-long campaign to focus on the UDHR’s legacy, relevance and activism. The theme of the campaign will be “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.”

“December 10th is about calling attention to those of our fellow people, both around the world and in our own communities, who cannot take some fundamental human rights for granted the way that others of us can,” Stava-Murray said. “It is up to those of us who are relatively more privileged to step up and to speak up, so that inequalities and injustices can be exposed and rectified.”
