Ammons in partnership with Ameren Illinois distributes LED light bulbs to households as part of ‘Light Up the Cities Initiative’

Champaign, Ill. – State Representative Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, set aside large quantities of “energy efficient light bulbs” as part of the ‘Light Up the Cities Initiative’, which helps households transition to energy-efficient LED bulbs. To make sure light bulbs get to customers who need them most, Representative Ammons’ office will partner with food banks, township offices, the City of Champaign and other nonprofit community partners  for distribution throughout Ameren’s service area.  

Each box contains four light-emitting diode bulbs. Most LEDs last 10 times longer and use 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs. That means if a customer replaces four standard bulbs with new LEDs, the energy savings add up. 

“We will give away nearly 2,000 energy-efficient bulbs to customers who are still reeling financially from the pandemic,” Ammons said. “The bulbs will help lower electricity use and save money on their energy bills.”

In addition to saving on energy costs, ensuring community streets have high quality and long-lasting street lighting is a top priority. The bulbs will also help communities like Garden Hills, who need more lighting to help with public safety issues. 

“This is great. These bulbs will help with our residents through our rental assistance program, which serves over a thousand people,” Cunningham Township Supervisor Danielle Chynoweth  said. “The township office will send out information to their clients to pick up a free bulb in conjunction with their upcoming coat drive.”  

“The City of Champaign Township is thankful to Representative Ammons and Ameren for their donation of lightbulbs which will be provided to township clients that receive general assistance and rental assistance,” said City of Champaign Supervisor, Andy Quarnstrom.
