Stuart Backs Ameren Rebate Legislation

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Ameren customers would receive rebates to offset high utility costs under legislation backed by state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, designed to help families with rising energy prices.

“The rise in energy prices this summer has been a strain on the budgets of many Illinois households, families and small businesses,” Stuart said. “That’s why I support this bill, which will deliver direct rebates to those who are affected to take away some of the financial pressure and help hardworking people to get by.”

Stuart is sponsoring House Bill 5799 which would create the Power Price Mitigation Rebate Act. This measure would provide monthly rebates totaling around $170 for qualifying power customers between August and December 2022.

The rebates would be automatically deducted from customers’ power bills, with any excess rebate rolling over to the next month’s bill.

“Particularly during the hot summer months, limiting electricity use is simply not an option for many businesses and households,” Stuart said. “I’m getting behind this legislation because summer heat isn’t just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous; and it’s not right for people to have to choose between sticking to their budget and the health and safety of themselves, their families or their patrons if they have a business. These rebates are about doing right by our neighbors and fellow citizens.”
