CHICAGO – State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, responded to the news that approximately 60 Venezuelan migrants will be traveling from Texas to Chicago at the direction of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott with this statement:

“Two of Illinois’ defining values are its diversity and drive for inclusion of all cultures and ethnicities. Unlike far too many states, we welcome these migrants and the contributions they will undoubtedly make to our community.

“Chicagoans are now privileged to provide new homes for people who came to this country fleeing an authoritarian regime. While Governor Abbott and other Texas lawmakers have chosen to reject their wellbeing, Chicago will always be there to support those trying to keep themselves and their families safe.

“I have spearheaded laws promoting job training, affordable health care and better schools; initiatives that are proving their worth again as they help migrants build new lives. Today is another reminder of the importance of the fight to assist underserved communities.”
