Rep. Hernandez Pushes for Insulin Cap, Health Care Accessibility

CICERO, Ill. — State Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, is fighting for Illinoisans living with diabetes in the wake recent efforts by congressional Republicans to block a federal cap on insulin prices. Hernandez is backing state-level efforts to cap insulin prices in Illinois at $35 a month under state-regulated insurance plans.

“According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, more than a million Illinoisans live with diabetes and need regular access to insulin to stay healthy. When we cap the price of insulin, it will ensure people can live their lives without the fear of not being able to afford this vital medicine,” Hernandez said. “We cannot allow large pharmaceutical and insurance companies to further increase insulin prices and put profits over the health and safety of people with diabetes.”

Hernandez is sponsoring House Bill 1466, which caps the cost of insulin at $35 for a 30-day supply and creates an emergency insulin discount program so those with diabetes do not face a crushing financial burden to pay for life-saving medication. The bill is currently awaiting consideration by the Illinois Senate. On top of her advocacy for people with diabetes, Hernandez was instrumental in the work to expand health care coverage for undocumented Illinois residents ages 42 and older.

“Relieving the costs of essential health care and medications allows Illinois’ working families to spend their money in other places, improving the local economy and our health system,” said Hernandez. “Access to affordable, high quality health care is a fundamental right that all human beings deserve, regardless of their background or circumstances. Whether it’s through capping the price of insulin or expanding health care coverage for undocumented individuals, I will always advocate this fundamental right so that all Illinoisans can live safe and healthy lives.”
