NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Insurance companies will be required to cover the cost of vitamins that help produce better outcomes for expectant mothers under a new law backed by state Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville.

“We need to make sure parents and families have all the resources they need,” Yang Rohr said. “Requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of prenatal vitamins is a commonsense step toward more comprehensive health equity. Good healthcare shouldn’t be restricted to those who can afford it.”

Yang Rohr passed House Bill 4338, which requires that individual and group accident insurance plans include prenatal vitamins under their prescription drug benefits. Coverage of these vitamins can only be authorized if a licensed physician or advanced practice registered nurse writes a prescription for these medications. The bill was recently signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker.

“This measure helps lift some of the financial burden of raising a family here in Illinois,” Yang Rohr said. “The recent baby formula shortage showed how parents are often being put in tough financial positions. This new law is only the beginning of my fight to bring down costs. And as a representative and a mother, I will always support measures that put Illinois families first.”

House Bill 4338 is supported by the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, Planned Parenthood Illinois Action, and She Votes Illinois.

These benefits go into effect January 1, 2024.
