Hernandez Celebrates Health Care Coverage Expansion for Undocumented Immigrants

CICERO, Ill. — All income-eligible Illinoisans ages 42 and up can enroll in health care coverage regardless of immigration status, thanks to a new policy championed by state Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero. This historic expansion will provide comprehensive, affordable health coverage to approximately 27,000 uninsured low-income immigrants, according to Healthy Illinois.

“For too long, undocumented immigrants have been deliberately excluded from our health care systems and denied the life saving care they need because they cannot afford it,” Hernandez said. “This expansion will save lives and allow people to seek out preventative health care for what may be the first time. Through this new policy, we are creating a more inclusive state and finally treating Illinois’ undocumented immigrants with the dignity and respect they are so often denied.”

The Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults program provides a full benefit package with $0 premiums and $0 copayments, according to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. The program covers individuals ages 42 through 64 years old who are legal permanent residents or undocumented immigrants of a certain income. Illinois residents ages 65 and up are covered by a similar program, Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors.

“This expansion in health care coverage sends a clear message to the rest of our nation — health care is a fundamental right that all human beings deserve, regardless of their background or circumstances,” said Hernandez. “We must continue to expand health care coverage to all residents, regardless of their immigration status, so that everyone has access to the care they need.”
