CHICAGO, Ill. – A bill carried by state Rep. Camille Lilly, D-Chicago, that will expand insurance coverage of home health care services was signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker Friday.

“Dealing with severe or long-term illness is frightening and difficult, and no one should have to worry about affording health care during that time,” said Lilly. “This legislation helps people access the home health care services they need so that they can focus on healing from their injury or illness.”

House Bill 5585 requires individual and group accident and health insurance policies and managed care plans to cover access to home health services for the duration of medically necessary care. This expansion in coverage can be used as an alternative to nursing homes or other long-term care facilities.

“Nursing homes and long-term care facilities aren’t the right fit for everyone. This bill gives individuals the financial flexibility to decide if home health care is right for them, so they can heal in an environment that is familiar and comforting,” Lilly said. “I thank Gov. Pritzker for signing this critical piece of legislation that expands health care options for everyone.”

House Bill 5585 passed through the legislature with no opposition and will go into effect in January 2024. For more information on this bill, please visit www.ilga.gov.
