CHICAGO – As part of her efforts to increase the road safety and the safety of communities across Illinois, state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, voted for a bill that makes it illegal for a person to engage in street racing on any street or highway across the state.
“Street racing causes car accidents and endangers other drivers who try to drive in a safe and legal manner,” said Hurley. “This reckless behavior has no place on any road or highway in Illinois.”
House Bill 5439 prohibits a person from knowingly operating a vehicle in a manner that impedes, blocks, obstructs or interferes with the movement of another driver on an expressway or controlled access highway. The bill makes this act a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a determinate sentence of less than one year.
“I voted for House Bill 5439 because it provides common sense restrictions to make our roads and highways safer,” said Hurley. “This bill has the potential to deter reckless individuals from street racing and protect drivers across the state.”
House Bill 5439 passed unanimously out of the House of Representatives and now faces consideration by the Senate.
