Hoffman Backs Judge McCuskey for Legislative Inspector General

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Belleville, joined a bipartisan effort Thursday to name former Judge Michael McCuskey the state’s next Legislative Inspector General.

“With the extended vacancy of the Legislative Inspector General’s office, Judge McCuskey’s appointment could not be delayed. I have known Judge McCuskey for over 30 years and I have every confidence that he will fulfill his responsibilities. He will provide honesty, integrity, fairness and objectivity to the General Assembly,” said Hoffman. “The Legislative Inspector General provides much needed oversight to ensure members of the Illinois General Assembly adhere to a strict ethical code. That is why it was important to fill the position without further delay.”

Before his retirement in 2020, McCuskey served as both a state and federal judge. Based in central Illinois, McCuskey served on the bench for over three decades starting in the late 80’s. In 1998, he was appointed by President Clinton to the federal court and confirmed by Republican-controlled Senate. McCuskey retired from the federal court in 2014 and served Illinois’ 10th Judicial District until 2020.

As legislative inspector general, McCuskey will be tasked with reviewing possible ethics violations by members of the General Assembly and relevant staffs. With the General Assembly’s confirmation today, McCuskey’s appointment will run through June 30, 2023.
